Publisher: Scribner 544 pages

Synopsis
Stephen King returns to the character and territory of one of his most popular novels ever, The Shining , in this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance and the very special twelve-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals. On highways across America, a tribe of people called the True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless--mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and spunky twelve-year-old Abra Stone learns, the True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the steam that children with the shining produce when they are slowly tortured to death. Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel, where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father's legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant shining power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes "Doctor Sleep." Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan's own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra's soul and survival. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of devoted readers of The Shining and satisfy anyone new to this icon in the King canon., Stephen King returns to the characters and territory of one of his most popular novels ever, The Shining , in this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance (the boy protagonist of The Shining ) and the very special twelve-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals. Biography

Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was born in Llandaff, South Wales, and went to Repton School in England. His parents were Norwegian, so holidays were spent in Norway. As he explains in Boy, he turned down the idea of university in favor of a job that would take him to"a wonderful faraway place. In 1933 he joined the Shell Company, which sent him to Mombasa in East Africa. When World War II began in 1939 he became a fighter pilot and in 1942 was made assistant air attaché in Washington, where he started to write short stories. His first major success as a writer for children was in 1964. Thereafter his children's books brought him increasing popularity, and when he died children mourned the world over, particularly in Britain where he had lived for many years. The BFG is dedicated to the memory of Roald Dahls eldest daughter, Olivia, who died from measles when she was seven - the same age at which his sister had died (fron appendicitis) over forty years before. Quentin Blake, the first Children's Laureate of the United Kingdom, has illustrated most of Roald Dahl's children's books.

The Book Thief

Title: The Book Thief
Author: Markus Zusak
Genre: Fiction; Psychological Thriller; Hard to Classify
Length: 560 pages
ISBN: 9780375842207

“There’s an expression that War and Death are like best friends. So, I thought, who better to tell a story set in Nazi Germany, because Death was everywhere at that time and place. And what’s the opposite of that all-powerful Death? Vulnerable Death. What if Death were afraid of us? What if Death were haunted by humans?”     – Markus Zusak

From the time we’re old enough to realize fully the dangers of life and recognize its brevity and uncertainty, we all fear Death. It’s partly instinct: like all other animals, humans are born with the instinct to avoid demise. And it’s partly reason: our fear of Death grows increasingly strong as we gain wisdom and the ability to understand the odds that are stacked against us. But what if, like Markus Zusak asks, Death were afraid of us, too?

And why wouldn’t Death fear us? Death is, after all, on hand to see all of the terrible things humans do to each other.

Charged with the arduous and impossibly lonely task of taking human souls from the Earth, Death is merely a creature obligated to perform the unenviable task of carrying souls away from this world once violence and sickness have done their irreversible damage.

It makes sense, then, that Death would grow unbearably weary of human suffering, haunted by the twisted evil of which humans are capable. Perhaps that’s why Death, the narrator of Zusak’s award-winning novel
The Book Thief , is so drawn to Liesel Meminger and her foster family - Germans who keep their hearts closed to the blackness of Nazi ideology and treasure the small, bright pockets of love in their uncertain world.

As Zusak himself explains,
The Book Thief is about “trying to find beautiful moments in an ugly time.” As our narrator, Death lends a surprising and effective new perspective to Holocaust literature with his compassionate focus on Liesel’s vulnerable childhood, and the beauty and kindness that can still be found even as hatred spreads like a quick disease.

Somewhere along his interminable journey of soul-taking across the globe, Death’s curiosity is piqued by the small blonde child who steals “The Gravedigger’s Handbook,” a book that’s fallen in the snow beside her little brother’s hastily-dug grave. Thus, the Book Thief is born, and Death begins an intense fascination with Liesel’s life; he is entranced by the little girl who steals books and somehow manages to avoid his grasp while all those around her seem to become his victims, one by one.

Set in Nazi Germany,
The Book Thief delves into the harrowing nightmare of the Holocaust through an imaginatively novel lens. Zusak takes Death out of hiding, rips off his shroud of mystery, and holds him up to the light for us to explore with our imaginations. When we read about war and the Holocaust, Death is central to everything that’s touched upon. Zusak harnesses the ubiquity of this concept to give us a clever twist on the obvious Holocaust story: It’s still about injustice, upended lives, and innocence lost, but Death is no longer the ever-present elephant in the room. Indeed, the elephant finally tells the story from his point of view – and, once again, who better to tell the consequences of the Holocaust than Death himself?

And so the story of Liesel Meminger is narrated by Death, punctuated by his wistful commentaries, comic-like illustrations, age-old wisdom, and clarity-inducing witticisms on life and all its challenges. Death’s narration of this little girl’s experience of love, loss, and tragedy is detailed, touching, and moving in an abundance of ways. You can’t help but wonder at how much comfort Death must take in her one, sweet life as he watches with horror the destruction of so many others.

A cast of dynamic villagers, including Liesel’s foster family, the Hubermanns, her best friend Rudy Steiner, and the mayor’s wife Ilsa Hermann all flesh out the child’s life before, during, and after the height of Nazi aggression. Through it all, Liesel continues her book thievery, the habit that began with the snatching of “The Gravedigger’s Handbook” on the day of her brother’s death, even risking Nazi violence to steal books from their notorious book-burnings.

But Max Vandenburg is the heart of Liesel’s childhood tale, and Death watches closely as their unlikely friendship unfolds. A Jewish fist-fighter, Max is taken in by the kind Hans Hubermann and hidden in the basement. The young Liesel is drawn to Max: Descriptions of their time together depict the coming together of two minds, both distorted by enormous fear and fighting to overcome the constant terror of life’s very real nightmares.

To be certain, there is a hair-raising irony that permeates
The Book Thief : everyone is hiding (Max from the Gestapo, Liesel and the Hubermanns from being exposed as Jewish sympathizers) in order to avoid Death, yet Death himself is carefully watching them all the while. Death, of course, has nowhere to hide. The totality of human suffering, violence, torture and hate is so great that he can’t ever hope to escape the torments of carrying innocent souls – millions upon millions of them – from their bodies.

Once you’ve begun hearing Death’s tale, you might start to believe that Death really is more afraid of us than we are of him. And you’ll certainly share his deep fascination with the girl named Liesel who met Death many times but never left with him, even as inhumanity and violence devoured her world.

The High Performance Handbook creates a customized workout routine based on you

STOP Wasting Your Time With Cookie Cutter Workout Programs

Have you ever wondered why the program that helped your best friend put 30lbs on his squat didn't do the same for you?

Have you ever tried to follow a workout from the pages of a magazine only to see yourself get weaker and smaller... or even worse, fatter?

Have you ever tried your hand at the most popular new training system only to find yourself hobbling around in pain over the next few days... or even worse, injured?

If you answered yes to even one of these questions, then I've got some very good news for you.

My name is Eric Cressey, and I am the president of Cressey Performance, a high performance training facility near Boston, MA. We started off small, but we're now a 15,000-square-foot training facility.

You don't work your way up to a facility of this size without providing great coaching to your clients. You know why? Because if you aren't excellent at what you do - constantly updating your training philosophies to give clients the best possible experience and amazing results - you go out of business quickly. Furthermore, you need to be able to coach whoever walks through your doors. Here at CP, we see hundreds of different clients every week.

We've coached people from all walks of life, including:

- Former college athletes seeking a new competitive outlet
- Teenagers working hard to get into the major leagues
- Women trying to lose their pregnancy weight
- Lifelong "hardgainers" looking to pack on muscle mass
- Tennis players looking to bulletproof their shoulders
- Middle-aged desk jockeys who just want to be able to crush beer and wings during NFL games on Sunday afternoons guilt-free
- Powerlifters who want to move serious weight
- Post-surgery cases who just want to maintain training during their rehabilitation

We even have professional athletes who literally move their families across the country to train with us.

As you can imagine, I've seen it all, and after working with such a wide variety of people, I've come away with one big lesson:

No Two People Move the Same... Including You

When I decided to create a workout system, there was something that was more important to me than anything else: a strong emphasis on personalization.

The problem with other programs out there is they force people to fit into their system of training. Admittedly it's better than having no direction, but for a lot of people it can make things worse off than they already were.

Let's take a woman with loose joints (hypermobility) as an example. If she did a lot of aggressive stretching (you know, because the experts are always telling us to stretch), she could easily hurt herself! Conversely, the stiff-as-a-board guy at the cubicle next to her might do those exact same stretches and rid himself of his chronic back pain!

Now imagine this scenario and apply it to a workout where these same people are applying heavy loads to their body. It's a recipe for disaster.
Which brings me to my point: why do people still buy cookie cutter programs?
I've thought about it long and hard, and it seems like there are two reasons:
  • High quality customized programs are usually very expensive.
  • There are only a handful of coaches out there who can deliver such high quality customized programs.
I hate to say it, but the industry is full of unqualified people who lack the educational background and the practical hands-on experience to know what works and what doesn't.

After spending the past few years trying to figure out a solution to these issues, I've finally come up with a way to deliver high quality customization at an affordable price. It's called The High Performance Handbook.

The High Performance Handbook Is Like Nothing You've Ever Seen Before...

First, unlike your typical cookie-cutter program, it doesn't force you to do an exercise you can't.

Second, it designs a program suitable to your needs - based on how you move, what your schedule allows, and what your goals are.

Third, it's an entire system. Not just some manual that says "do this." We give you an entire video database, how to modify exercises, and much more.

Most important, it does all of this at a very affordable price.
Don't just take my word for it, see what clients and fitness professionals have to say about my approach to coaching:

7 Simple Tips For Successful Study Habits

By Princess Ivana Pignat

“The authority of those who teach is often an obstacle to those who want to learn.” - Cicero

I can’t believe it! My four-year-old son has homework in pre-school. This consisted of having to make a house! A house? I had to make one once in fifth grade, but in pre-school?

Of course Alessio was having a meltdown. I was too. Though I was tempted to step in and build Alessio’s house “with” him (parent code: “for him”), I knew if I jumped in and helped too much, it would only confirm his worry that he couldn’t do the task at hand.

I decided the only way to tackle the project was to have fun, and let him make whatever kind of house he wanted.

I took him to the art store and let him choose the supplies. He ended up turning in a lopsided, two-walled house covered with moustache stickers, globs of wet paint and lollipops on the roof. Was it an accurate depiction of our home? Uhm, no. But it was an accurate depiction of Alessio’s creativity. He was so proud of it, and I was too. Alessio did it all on his own.

The lesson here for both child and parent is that building confidence is more important than building a perfect house, or turning in the perfect homework paper.

Homework gives children a chance to actively absorb lessons from the day, by doing them on their own. No matter what age, your children need to perform these tasks themselves. A parent’s job is to keep an eye out, listen for warning signals of overload or frustration, and gently guide only when necessary.

The best way you can help your children with their homework is to create the right learning environment at home. Good study habits are crucial to school success from first grade through college. It’s never too late or too early to start. Here are seven simple tips:

1. Set the schedule for learning. The first hour after school is best for study. This gives your child incentive to complete the work. If she finishes early, there’s more play time afterwards. No more Come in and do your homework! Aw, no, Mom! because it will already be done.

2. Start things off with a healthy snack. After a full day at school, most kids come home a bit tired and hungry. High energy snacks like almonds and raisins will boost your child’s brainpower and help him think through those sometimes tough math problems. Be sure to hydrate, too, with plenty of water which also helps the thinking process.

3. Create a distraction-free zone. Turn off TV, radio, cell phone, or other distractions. Your child will be better able to focus, and homework will flow more smoothly.

4. Good study requires good planning. Most kids study in their rooms. Make sure your child has a table to work on with enough space. Get a big, inspiring calendar to hang on the wall. Put your child in charge of filling in test dates and project due dates, as well as making a list for any special supplies or books she may need to complete the projects. Being organized creates less panic and more confidence.

5. Study 45 minutes, then take a 15-minute break. Many older children have quite a bit of homework these days. Sometimes hours. But most people can only concentrate well for about 45 minutes. By taking a 15-minute break (or even a 15-minute nap) after studying, the brain retains more information. Using a timer can help your student enjoy learning more and get better grades through pacing himself.

6. The best reward is a job well done. Don’t offer rewards beyond sincere praise for a job well done when it comes to the daily homework. Larger projects, where your child has exerted a giant effort, deserve some extra attention - maybe a dinner out, a special dessert or a movie.

7. Learning can and should be fun. Get excited when your children learn new things. Talk about projects over dinner. Tell your daughter what you love about her ideas, or how excited you are about what your son is learning. Around the table, each family member can talk about what they learned that day. Fostering a life-long love of learning is indeed a family affair.

by Christina Lamb and Malala Yousafzai

Synopsis

'I come from a country that was created at midnight. When I almost died it was just after midday. We'd finished for the day and I was on the open-back truck we use as a school bus. There were no windows, just thick plastic sheeting that flapped at the sides and a postage stamp of open sky at the back through which I caught a glimpse of a kite wheeling up and down. It was pink, my favourite colour.' In 2009 Malala Yousafzai began writing an anonymous blog for BBC Urdu about life in the Swat Valley as the Taliban gained control, at times banning girls from attending school. When her identity was discovered, Malala began to appear in Pakistani and international media, campaigning for education for all. On 9 October 2012, Malala was shot at point-blank range by a member of the Taliban on the way home from school. Remarkably, she survived. In April 2013, Time magazine named her one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World. I AM MALALA tells the inspiring story of a schoolgirl who was determined not to be intimidated by extremists, and faced the Taliban with immense courage. Malala speaks of her continuing campaign for every girl's right to an education, shining a light into the lives of those children who cannot attend school. This is just the beginning. . .

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, April 2013: Every time Ursula Todd dies, she is born again. Each successive life is an iteration on the last, and we see how Ursula's choices affect her, those around her, and--so boldly--the fate of the 20th-century world. Most impressive is how Kate Atkinson keeps the complexity of her postmodern plotting so nimble. Life After Life approaches the universe in both the micro- and macro sense, balancing the interior lives of Ursula's friends and family with the weight of two World Wars. (How many writers can make domestic drama as compelling as the London Blitz?) Life After Life is an extraordinary feat of narrative ambition, an audacious genre-bender, and a work of literary genius. --Kevin Nguyen

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, June 2013: In 1859, Eli McCullough, the 13-year-old son of Texas pioneers, is captured in a brutal Comanche raid on his family's homestead. First taken as a slave along with his less intrepid brother, Eli assimilates himself into Comanche culture, learning their arts of riding, hunting, and total warfare. When the tribe succumbs to waves of disease and settlers, Eli's only option is a return to Texas, where his acquired thirsts for freedom and self-determination set a course for his family's inexorable rise through the industries of cattle and oil. The Son is Philipp Meyer's epic tale of more than 150 years of money, family, and power, told through the memories of three unforgettable narrators: Eli, now 100 and known simply as "the Colonel"; Eli's son Peter, called "the great disappointment" for his failure to meet the family’s vision of itself; and Eli's great-granddaughter Jeanne Anne, who struggles to maintain the McCullough empire in the economic frontier of modern Texas. The book is long but never dull—Meyer's gift (and obsession) for historical detail and vernacular is revelatory, and the distinct voices of his fully fleshed-and-blooded characters drive the story. And let there be blood: some readers will flinch at Meyer's blunt (and often mesmerizing) portrayal of violence in mid-19th century Texas, but it’s never gratuitous. His first novel, 2009's American Rust, drew praise for its stark and original characterization of post-industrial America, but Meyer has outdone himself with The Son, as ambitious a book as any you’ll read this year--or any year. Early reviewers call it a masterpiece, and while it's easy to dismiss so many raves as hyperbole, The Son is an extraordinary achievement. --Jon Foro

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, April 2013: Talk about bad luck: In 1942, a United States cargo plane crash-landed while flying over Greenland, stranding the crew on sea of ice. A rescue flight was quickly dispatched--it crashed in a November storm, stranding its own nine crewmembers. The third time was not the charm: a second rescue mission disappeared in another blizzard, leaving neither clues nor apparent survivors. Subsequent attempts--some with fatal results--failed under the harsh conditions, forcing the men to weather the Arctic winter in makeshift shelters, including the tail section of a broken bomber. This tale of survival in the deadliest conditions would be enthralling on its own (and it is), but Zuckoff's meticulous research led him to a modern-day group dedicated to solving the mystery of the third flight. As a chronicler of their mission, Zuckoff is swept into their adventure, and his project becomes much more than an interesting World War II subplot. Part Alive, part Shackleton, Frozen in Time is a thrilling story of courage, perseverance, and loyalty that spans decades. --Jon Foro

Editorial Reviews

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, April 2013: This knowing, generous and slyly sly new novel follows a group of teenagers who meet at a summer camp for artsy teens in 1974 and survive as friends through the competitions and realities of growing up. At its heart is Jules (nee Julie, she changes it that first summer to seem more sophisticated) Jacobson, an aspiring comic actress who comes to realize she’s got more creative temperament than talent; her almost boyfriend Ethan Figman, the true genius in the bunch (he’s a cartoonist); musician Jonah Bay, son of a famous Baez-ish folksinger; and the Wolf siblings, Ash and Goodman, attractive and mysterious. How these five circle each other, come together and break apart, makes for plenty of hilarious scenes and plenty of heartbreaking ones, too. A compelling coming of age story about five privileged kids, this is also a pitch-perfect tale about a particular generation and the era that spawned it. --Sara Nelson

FAQ:

What if I order and for some reason it just doesn’t work for me?It is my opinion, like we talked about earlier that there really is no impossible situation, but I have been wrong before and if for some weird reason it doesn’t work for you…or even if you are not absolutely delighted FOR ANY REASON…please, I WANT you to get a refund. In fact, you have a full 56 days before you have to decide. How cool is that?

Can’t I just find this information free on the internet? I LOVE to save my money and find stuff free when I can, but I know for a fact that the only place on the planet that you can get your hands on what is inside The Magic Of Making UP System is right here. See, I have spent hours looking at what is available…and some of it is tepidly okay…but you don’t get the WHOLE PICTURE…and reading an article or two without really understanding what you are doing…can really hurt your chances rather than improve them.

What about the other “Get Your Ex Back” books? What about your competition? Fair question…I won’t say anything bad about them. At the same time I can sum up what “my competition” charges you for in just a few sentences…
I have bought them ALL…Do you want a summary of all of them? Okay…here’s what nearly every one of them tell you in just a different way…
“Do not contact your ex for 30 days…and during that 30 days work on yourself.”
THAT’S IT!…Can you believe it? …that is what they tell you to do for EVERY situation! Some take 50 pages to say it…some take less…and some give a little more okay advice, but in my opinion they do not give you the tools you really need!

Frankly, there are some situations…where all you really need is a good apology…make the apology the right way (like I show you in The Magic Of Making Up System) and you and your honey will “ride off into the sunset”.

When will I receive The Magic Of Making Up? Great question. You will receive it immediately after you have ordered because it is a downloadable book (eBook). So you will have it on your hard drive and in your hands in moments. It is very safe, reliable and so easy a caveman could download it.

Can I use the The Magic Of Making Up on a Mac? Yes! The Magic Of Making Up System is in PDF format so it is viewable on PCs as well as Macs.

What if I have a question about something in The Magic Of Making Up? Terrific! It would be my pleasure to give you a hand and I give you a special “customers only” contact address within the manual.
